Letland 4. dagur – Liepaja /Latvia 4th Day Liepaja

Vit vitjaðu m.a. eina russikt ortodoksa kirkju, Sankta Nikolas Sjómans Dómkirkjuna og vitjaðu ein hernaðarpir frá sovjettíðini.

Kvøldið endaði við frálíkari klassiskar konsert í nýggju stórslignu konserthøllini Amber Hall, har spennandi verk av tónaskaldinum Pēteris Vasks vóru á skránni. Her hitti eg eisini fyriskiparin fyri letlendska partin av ferðini Ievu Hermansone, frá skrivstovuni hjá Norðurlandaráðnum í Letlandi.

The journey in Latvia began in Liepāja, Latvia’s third largest city. First on the program was a guided tour to Karosta, an almost abandoned military area. The area is giantic and many thousand Russians lived there during the occupation. Now large parts of the buildings are abandoned. We visited a Russian Orthodox Church, St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral and a military pier from the Soviet era.

The evening ended with a magnificent classical concert in the new impressive Amber Hall, where spending works by composer Pēteris Vasks were on the program. Here I also met for the first time the organizer of the easy-going part of the journey, Ieva Hermansone, from the Nordic Council of Ministers office in Latvia.
