The journey in Latvia began in Liepāja, Latvia’s third largest city. First on the program was a guided tour to Karosta, an almost abandoned military area. The area is giantic and many thousand Russians lived there during the occupation. Now large parts of the buildings are abandoned. We visited a Russian Orthodox Church, St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral and a military pier from the Soviet era.
The evening ended with a magnificent classical concert in the new impressive Amber Hall, where spending works by composer Pēteris Vasks were on the program. Here I also met for the first time the organizer of the easy-going part of the journey, Ieva Hermansone, from the Nordic Council of Ministers office in Latvia.
